Class Meeting Minutes

DC TRIP UPDATE

Message from John L;

CLASS TRIP TO DC

Update!

C.A. JOHNSON CLASS CLUB “64”

Dear Class,

We are ready for our historic trip to Washington, DC.  Our plans to visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the Nation’s capital next month will coincide with the 49th anniversary observance of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. Derek Barber King, Sr., pictured above with his uncle, will join us at the King Memorial on the 4th of April for this special occasion. We have over 50 individuals traveling with us to the nation’s capital.  We are especially honored to have a member of the King Family to share with us at this national site in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Thanks to the members of our class, we have filled all our seats as well as all the rooms at our hotel.  As a result, we have made full use of every available space; therefore, we cannot add anyone else who has not already committed to travel with us.  However, in addition to those who are traveling from Columbia, we have included in our count for tickets, those who live in the Washington DC area and have expressed an interest in visiting the Museum, or joining with us at various points in our itinerary.

The museum has confirmation of our arrival time.  Except for those who are traveling on the bus, you must make plans to arrive on time for entrance into each event with the class.  If you have paid your deposit, you must make your final payment to the class treasurer prior to March 15th.  All payments to the hotel have already been made and confirmed.

We decided in our last class meeting to shorten our trip by one day.  The bus will depart at 9:00 am from the Columbia Mall, (Parkland & Two Notch Road) near the Richland County Sheriff Substation on the west side of the Mall near the Sear’s entrance.  It was recommended by the class that parking at the school would be problematic due to a lack of security.

The dates for our trip are 4/03/17 – 4/06/17.  We will stay at the Comfort Inn Oxon Hill, located at 6363 Oxon Hill Rd, - Oxon Hill, MD 20745.  Please note the revised itinerary posted below.

It is important to remember that you must cover all personal expenses such as food and souvenirs.  We also remind you that class dues of $25.00 for 2017 are to be mailed to the class treasurer as well.  All checks should be mailed to CA Johnson Class 64, P.O. Box 675 - Columbia, SC 29202.

Also, you are encouraged to visit our website www.CAJCLASS64.org and register as a new member, if you have not done so, with an email address and a password of your own choosing.  Please forward any changes to our website of your correct address, phone number and email address.  It is important that you update your information as often as needed.  If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at (803) 386-3163 (home) or (720) 480-9251 (mobile).

Sincerely,

Rev. John Thompson,

President, CA Johnson Class Club, 64

Sylvia Davis

Thelma Hughes

Modine Cunningham

John Wilson

Martha Oree

We started out with a healthy discussion about the forthcoming Super bowl.

We listed the following places that would be a good location for our class picnic:

Red Mudd

Saluda Shoals

Western Lake

Hastings Point

After a broad discussion, it was decided that we would gather initially for a meet and greet at the Senior Adult Center on Park lane for Friday and have our picnic on Saturday at the Western Lake on Fort Jackson. The dates of our Class Gathering will be the 9th and 10th of September 2016.

Sylvia Davis reminded us of how important it was to keep our expenses low in order to assure that class members who are experiencing financial challenges will be able to participate. It was reaffirmed that our class dues will be $25.00 for the year.

There was an update of all known classmates who are ill and hospitalized.

Since we did not get a financial report we could not reconcile all of the spending for our class reunion.  However, we do have bank statements.

The class discussed the importance of having someone to serve as treasurer who can be available for all our meetings.  Several people were nominated for treasurer and John Wilson was voted in as the new treasurer and Gary Bell was elected as his assistant.

Caroline White will be asked to turn over all the books, keys and cards to John Wilson. Gary Bell insisted that we have an audit before the transfer of books and records. Gary also recommended that we close the current account and transfer the funds to a new account with two people authorized to sign. Gary Bell also agreed to set up and keep the records and provide regular financial reports.  Gary wants copies of all the bank statements from May 1st 2015 to the present.

The following is the most recent financial information we have:

Financial Report: As of June 1, 2015

$1,659.46             Checking Account

$3,736.33             Reunion Account

$20.45                   Credit Card Account

$732.29 CD

Sylvia Davis offered a motion that John Wilson will serve as the new treasurer and Gary Bell will keep the records as the assistant treasurer. The motion was seconded by Sammy McKie and passed unanimously.

It was recommended that we meet monthly to coordinate all of our planning for the Class Gathering.  Our next meeting is scheduled for the Little Pig Barbecue, 4927 Alpine Road on Thursday, February 25, 2016 at 11:00 a.m.

Sylvia Davis offered to take minutes for the class whenever Zoie Walker cannot be present.

We closed our meeting with prayer for our classmates who are ill and/or hospitalized. Special prayers were lifted up for Wilbur Ann, Pat Bogan and Cheryl Johnson.

John Thompson, Class Club President, 64

Class Meeting on July 15, 2015

The class met at the home of Sylvia Davis. We reviewed the list of all the classmates who are ill and hospitalized. Members of the class shared their very personal journeys with their illnesses. It was recommended that we post all the names of classmates who are ill and hospitalized, in a section of the website limited to members only. The class voted to authorize a special page on the website that only members who have registered can access to keep the class informed on members who are sick and hospitalized. Anyone who wishes not to have his/her name listed, please advise. Of course, no personal information in terms of the nature of one’s illness will be shared; only an invitation to offer prayer.

There was a discussion of the class photo and the number of class members who have yet to receive a picture. Beverly Washington and Caroline White will coordinate their lists and assure that all members who paid for the reunion will get a class picture.

It was decided that we will have a class gathering next year in September for two days after Labor Day (Friday and Saturday). It will not be a reunion, but an opportunity for the class to come together for fellowship. The objective is just for us to come together.  It was also decided to reduce the Annual class dues back to $25.00 since we increased the dues only for our 50th Class Reunion.

Red Mudd

Saluda Shoals

Western Lake

Hastings Point

Henry Hipps reported that the cost of the website was $150.00 and to have our own domain was $20.00.  We discussed various locations to schedule our future meetings such as the 2nd Floor behind the Sheriff Department in Columbia Mall.

There was a broad discussion on providing support for Caroline White when she is not able to attend meetings.  It was decided that all reimbursements will be made by requisition.  There was not a complete financial report, but the following information was presented:

Financial Report: As of June 1, 2015

$1,659.46             Checking Account

$3,736.33             Reunion Account

$20.45                   Credit Card Account

$732.29 CD

Sylvia prepared a delicious meal for the class.  We enjoyed the meal and the fellowship before going home.
