Message from John L

Dear Classmates,

Although our class gathering was delayed by one year due to the storm of 2018, we had an exciting time last month as we met here in Columbia.  A special thanks to all of those who showed up, especially the class members we had not seen in many years.  Of course, we also note the absence of the classmates who paid to attend last year but were unable to make it this year because of previous family commitments.  More importantly, we cannot forget those who were ill as well as the classmates who died over the course of the past year.  Kudos to the planning committee for the food, the entertainment and the special gifts.

In our last class meeting we decided not to meet until the end of summer.  Now that our class gathering of 2019 is behind us, we must focus on 2020.  The class voted to gather again next year, returning to our regular schedule.

The highlights of our event for this year included a “Meet and Greet” with entertainment from Jessie Sumter, the James Brown impersonator.  He treated us with his band as well as his dancers for a terrific evening.

All our activities took place at the Upper Richland Community Center.  Several classmates gathered earlier at the golf course next door.  Because we decided not to reprint our programs, we had to add names to our list of deceased members for our Class Memorial on Saturday.

On Sunday, we worshipped at the Brookland Baptist Church and enjoyed a delightful lunch in the church’s Banquet Hall.  Because many classmates paid for pictures at our last class reunion, but never received them, we did not take a class picture for this occasion.  Nevertheless, it is worth noting that many pictures were taken during our weekend.  We are encouraging those who have pictures to please submit them to Henry Hipps to be included on our website.

Class dues are $25.00for the year and all checks should be mailed to CA Johnson Class 64, P.O. Box 675 - Columbia, SC 29202. Please remember that checks are to be made out to C.A. Johnson Class Club of 64.

As always, you are encouraged to use our website as often as you wish.  If you have not done so, please go to our website and register as a new member with an email address and a password of your own choosing.  Henry Hipps is doing an outstanding job as the administrator.  If you have questions or need help, please email Henry at (  His phone number is (678) 739-6291.

We continue to ask you to remember in prayer, Delores Furgess, Shirley Anderson Gipson and Isaac “Bucky” McGraw.  Since many of you expressed concern for our classmate, Wade Hampton and his family in El Paso, Texas, I am very pleased to let you know that they are fine. Although one of the twenty-two people killed was a friend of Wade; he and his family are safe. Wade said he was only four miles from the Walmart when the shooting took place.

The C.A. Johnson Athletic Director, Eric Scriven, has announced that the graduating class of 2020 will mark the seventieth class to graduate from C.A. Johnson High School. This grand occasion will give us an opportunity to join in a celebration of 70 years of Educational Excellence. The celebration will include the Homecoming Parade and Football Game (Sept. 27) Bolden Stadium, the 70th Celebration Meet and Greet (Sept. 28) CAJ Atrium and Worship Service and Luncheon (Sept. 29) CAJ Auditorium. If registration and fees are received prior to August 30, 2019 the total package will be offered at a special rate of $70.

The C.A. Johnson Alumni Association, in partnership with the Richland County Public Library,is micro filming all our year books for historical purposes. Mr. King B. Jeffcoat has taken the lead in assisting the Richland County Public Library in collecting the year books. Thanks to Lula Casey Goodwine and Johnny James, our class yearbook has already been added.  If you wish to view the yearbook online, please go to:

Most sincerely,

John Thompson

CA Johnson “64” Class Club President

John, and all who prayed for me after I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year. I finished my chemotherapy on July 10th, and tests on July 16th show that I am now CANCER FREE through God's grace and mercy. I'm sharing this because I want everyone to know that all things are possible if we truly believe!  When my chemo infusion was complete, they rang a bell and gave me a certificate. My daughter led me out and nearly 30 MPD officers were there cheering when I came out. Want to also share those moments with all of you. Will be at whatever is next for our class!

NOTE:‚ÄčOur next class meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 26, 2019 – 11:00 a.m. at My House Restaurant and Grill, located at 7205 Two Notch Rd, across from the Old Kmart Shopping Center.  Columbia, SC 29223.
